TUE, 6/6: Meet and Greet with Colin Cantwell, creator of the Death Star @ TGE Charlotte Ave.

May 31, 2017

NEWS RELEASE

In continuing The Great Escape’s 40th anniversary celebration, we are excited to announce an in-store appearance by the creator of the Death Star, featured in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, Colin Cantwell!

Cantwell will be appearing in the special events room at our Charlotte Avenue Superstore location on Tuesday, June 6th, from 6 p.m. – 8. p.m. to present video clips about his career and his creation of the Death Star. He will also take part in a small Question and Answer session and then a Meet and Greet with the fans where he will sign autographs.

Along with the Death Star, he also designed the X-Wing, TIE Fighter, and the original Millennium Falcon for the first Star Wars movie. He also built these models using model kit parts, which was a groundbreaking technique at the time.

He was also involved in 2001: A Space Odyssey as the designer for the space scenes and suggesting the theme song for the film, “Also sprach Zarathustra.” He also worked on the films Close Encounters of the Third Kind, War Games, Buck Rogers, and Around the World in 80 Days.

Cantwell’s accomplishments aren’t just working on films, however, as he also helped design the first OmniMax theater in San Diego, and he also helped develop the first multi-color computer monitor for Hewlett-Packard.

During the Apollo 11 moon landing on July 20th, 1969, he functioned as the “Hal 9000” computer that gave Walter Cronkite the flight progress as he was broadcasting live on national television.

He has also written a two book series, CoreFires 1 and CoreFires 2. These are, naturally, science fiction adventures that are set in outer space.

Cantwell will be bringing copies of his book, CoreFires, to sell. He will also have for sale prints of the pencil sketches showing the original concept designs that he presented to George Lucas. An autograph will be included with the purchase of any of his material.

In celebration of our 40th anniversary, all Star Wars merchandise in the store will be 40% off for the entire day! It doesn’t matter what the item is: comics, toys, magazines, shirts, posters, etc. (if it is Star Wars related in any way it will be 40% off).

We hope you join us for this special evening and welcome Colin Cantwell from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 6th, at our Charlotte Avenue Superstore location. Admission is free, but seating will be limited.
